Adult Specialism
The pathway to a career as a Professionally Registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor with adults.
The Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (DPC) is a cost-effective training route which is designed for those seeking to become Professionally Accredited Counsellors. It is also relevant for individuals who may wish to develop and expand advanced counselling skills within either work or vocational settings. You may also apply to progress onto the Diploma in Psychotherapy training programme at the relevant point.
Key points:
- Length of course: 2 years
- Primary mode of study: Part-time, Evening (normally 5pm-9pm one or two nights per week, plus workshops)
- Location: Jesmond, Newcastle Training Centre
- Specialism: Adult
- Accreditation: Course Accredited by BACP
- Progression: A further year of supervised practice and CPD (Continuing Professional Development) can lead to registration as a UKCP Registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. To be eligible for UKCP registration the Counsellor must have completed 450 hours of supervised counselling practice in line with UKCP training requirements. On completion it is also possible to progress onto the Diploma in Psychotherapy and/or the MSc in Psychotherapy.

- Progression: In the final year, it is possible to progress onto the Diploma in Psychotherapy.
The pathway to a career as a Professionally Registered Adult Psychotherapist.
This four year part-time course is accredited by the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and leads to registration with the UK Council for Psychotherapy as a Psychotherapist. On successful completion of the course and training requirements you will be awarded the UKCP accredited Diploma in Psychotherapy.

A four year part-time training, this dynamic, focused and well-structured training is theory, practice and skills based, and taught from a Humanistic, Integrative and Psychodynamic perspective. In addition to cutting edge theory, you will learn applied arts-based creative methods for working with children and adolescents and have the opportunity to research your work. Please note that the Diploma in Child Psychotherapy combines both Child and Young Person training.

The Post Qualifying Diploma in Child Counselling or Child Psychotherapy (PQ DIP) is a bespoke training programme designed for Counsellors and Psychotherapists who want to extend their knowledge and skills to enable them to work with children and young people. This course meets BACP requirements for CPD and may lead to UKCP registration as a Child Psychotherapist/Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellor.

The accrediting pathway,through recognition of prior learning, would be suitable to someone who is qualified in working with adults and has substantial additional training and experience in working as a counsellor/therapist with children, and young people. This route would also apply to people who have completed child training which is not UKCP accredited.
Our new accrediting route, for those successful in meeting the criteria, will provide UKCP registration/membership and entry onto the UKCP Child Register via the College for Child and Adolescent Psychotherapies (CCAP).
Postgraduate
A two year programme designed for experienced Counsellors and Psychotherapists who are looking to deepen and extend their knowledge, engage in research, and develop expertise in a chosen specialist area.
Key points:
- Can be built into the Diploma in Psychotherapy route to gain UKCP Psychotherapist registration
- The option to exit with the PGDip qualification at the end of the taught year, or progress to complete your MSc Dissertation
- Length of course: 2 years + (1 year taught PGDiP, 1 year or more for MSc dissertation)
- Primary mode of study: Part-time, Weekend

- Fees: Cost-effective compared to other MSc courses
- Accreditation: PGDip/MSc course validated by Newman University
